Davis Cup – The largest international team competition in men's tennis. It has been held annually since 1900, since 1979 – under the auspices of the International Tennis Federation. As of 2020, representatives of 142 countries of the world take part in the Davis Cup.

The current format of the Davis Cup

In 2018, the previously operating regulations of the tournament was changed. Earlier, all matches were held between two teams on the home and exit match. There were 16 teams in the world group and for victory it was necessary to win 4 matches within a year.

Since 2019, to conquer the trophy, it is necessary to win in the final, which takes place in one place and within one week. 18 teams participate in the final: 12 teams that have passed the qualifications, four semi -finalists last year and two countries on Wild Card. 18 teams are divided into six groups, in which matches are held in a circular system. Six winners of the groups plus two teams that took second place, with the best indicators in the won matches and sets, go to the quarterfinals. Team competitions include three meetings: two single and paired combination. From the quarterfinals, matches are held through the Olympic system, the winner is awarded the trophy of the Davis Cup.

To participate in qualifying matches, a collection with a low rating must go through a multi -level system of zonal qualifying tournaments.

The Russian national team was among the 18 finalists, winning the qualification match on the exit team of Switzerland 3-1. The match was held in the city of Bil on February 1-2, 2019.

Based on the results of the draw, our rivals at the group stage were the teams of Spain and Croatia (group “B”), the teams of France, Serbia and Japan met in group “C”, in the “C” group – Argentina, Germany and Chile, in the “D” group – Belgium, Australia and Colombia, in the E “E” group – Great Britain, Kazakhstan and the Netherlands, in the group “F” – USA, Canada and Italy.

According to the results of the group stage, the Russian team reached the quarterfinals as one of the best teams that took second place. In the quarterfinals, the Russian team defeated the Serbian team in a bitter struggle – 2: 1. Karen Khachanov and Andrei Rublev won the decisive point in a tie-break in the third set of the doubles match against Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki, having played three match points before that.

In the semi-finals against Team Canada, things went to a tie-break in the third set of the decisive doubles match, but the last point remained with the opponents. Canada won – 6:3, 3:6, 7:6 (7:5)

Season 2021

According to the results of the performance in the 2019 season (reaching the 1/2 finals), the Russian team secured a performance in the final part without going through the qualifying matches. The 2021 Davis Cup Final will take place from 25 November to 5 December 2021. Due to the pandemic, this year's group stage final will be hosted in three cities: Madrid, Turin and Innsburg. Matches 1/4 finals, semi-finals and finals will be held in Madrid.
